The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers is the first of four books in the Wayfarers series. The Wayfarer is a ship used to punch wormholes through space from one location to another. They get the chance to take on a new job near the center of the galaxy that comes with a high reward, but higher risk than they may have realized. The crew of the ship is a multi-species group of seeming misfits, but with high skills. Rosemary joins the crew as a clerk to bring the record-keeping up-to-snuff. She has her own past that she is trying to escape.
The story mostly takes place on the year-long trip to the center of the galaxy where they will take on one of the biggest jobs they’ve ever done. It is a dangerous place with a race of potentially hostile aliens…. But that is really not what the story is about. The story is about the interactions of this motley crew and how they work together and fight and come to know each other.
Chambers is great at envisioning other species and how their cultures might come to be. She also does an excellent job of describing the interactions and intermixing of the different folks, both on the Wayfarer, and on the various planets they visit along the way.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is a very nice book with a very nice story. I enjoyed meeting the various characters and exploring the universe that Chambers creates. I have to admit that even though the crew goes from one encounter to another, it never felt like a whole lot was really happening. It was a long journey with ups and downs and problems and solutions, but sometimes it just seemed like each problem was just resolved and they moved on. I still liked the book a lot, but I can’t say it amazed me as much as her Monk and Robot books.
