I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream and Other Works by Harlan Ellison includes three previously published  collections: Paingod and Other Delusions, I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream, and From the Land of Fear.  I know I’ve read many of these stories in the past, but it had been way too long. Ellison is a master of the weird dark tales that disturb you and keep you thinking about them after you have put down the book (or turned of the headphones for the audiobook). He is one of the masters of the science fiction short story, though with today’s categories, you’d often call him a horror writer, etc.

One of the charms of the collections is Ellison’s brief introductions to each of the stories. He shares a bit about his life and his writing and, sometimes, how those led to the story you’re about to read. Some folks may just want to read the stories, but I found these enlightening, and enjoyable.  He makes it clear that the stories he writes are the most important part of his work, but he also did extensive work in television and movies.  From the original Star Trek, to A Boy And His Dog, to the Twilight Zone reboot in the 1980’s to 1700+ stories, novels, novellas, etc. Ellison was a prolific and amazing creative force.

I am not going to review the individual stories. They are all worth your time to read or listen to. If you are like me and you haven’t read Harlan Ellison in a while, this book is a good start to refreshing your brain. The stories hold up very well. Rereading some of the classic authors from back in the day, I often find myself cringing at how dated some of them feel.  I did not feel that at all with I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream and Other Works.  Most of these stories are more than half a century old, but they hold up and remain fresh. If you’ve never read Harlan Ellison, read yourself some Harlan Ellison. If you have read his works, read them again.
