Yes, it’s that time of year again. It’s time for this writer to experience the social and cultural phenomenon known as Comic Con – specifically MCM Expo in London, UK. This year’s convention proved to be another amazing event with over 130,000 attendees over three full days. The guest list was pretty impressive as well. It included Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland, Batman V Superman), Kunal Nayyar & Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory), Peter Davison (former Doctor Who), Poppy Drayton (MTV’s new post-apocalyptic series The Shannara Chronicles), and Jeremy Shada (the voice of Finn the human in Adventure Time). That was just the tip of the iceberg for the guest list. Nearly every geeky fandom was represented by one guest or another, from popular TV shows and movies, to anime, cartoons, comic book writers and artists, etc. But enough about the personalities.
For me, the real stars of the show are the cosplayers and costumers (see my previous post about the difference). The journey began early in the morning as we approached the London Excel Centre.
Comic Con Costa Coffee was much needed by quite a few of us there.
The banners always let you know what’s ahead in each of the venues.
Vendors of all types were there in record numbers selling t-shirts, Pop figures, video games, candy, and even soap especially designed for our geeky bathing needs.
There were displays advertising the newest shows and series, as well as those from the past. Outcast is the new Fox International series coming soon. Star Trek needs no explanation – unless you’ve been under a rock for the last 40 years.
But enough about the shows, the venue, and the coffee. Comic con is about the costumes and the camaraderie. Here’s some of the best, most fun, most inventive, and sometimes even outrageous costumes of the day.
I would like the thank the people behind London MCM Expo Comic Con for granting me a press pass again for the May con. It was really helpful in getting in and out of the Excel Centre, taking photos, and talking with con-goers. Check out their webpage for more information on their conventions, guest lists, etc.
