A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers is the second book in the Monk and Robot series. It picks up where A Psalm for the Wild-Built left off as Sibling Dex and Mosscap leave the wild lands and return to the populated areas. As with Psalm, this novella is more than just a story of travels on some moon orbiting an extra-terrestrial planet. It is sometimes a philosophical discussion of what is important in life. It explores alternate possibilities of how a society can work together with itself and with the overall environment to be beneficial for all. It may seem a little delusional that such a society could exist given humanity, but it is a beautiful vision to see and consider.
I won’t say much more about the story itself, except to say, you should definitely read this one. It is a beautiful narrative. An exploration of two very different, but very similar souls and how they proceed through the world. The importance of little things, like looking at trees and being with a friend. This is a beautiful, beautiful book. If you haven’t already read A Psalm for the Wild-Built, read that first, but then read A Prayer for the Crown-Shy. What are you waiting for…
