A family member goes missing and a young woman decides to do something about it — but then there’s the matter of god-like royalty who have their own interest in events. It’s a lot! But as author Jade Presley explains in this Big Idea for The Never List, it all comes together, for the readers and for her as a writer.
JADE PRESLEY:
The big idea for The Never List came to me while wrapping up my first why-choose romantasy adventure—the Shattered Isle series. The idea had been in the back of my mind while completing the last book in that series, but it wasn’t fully fleshed out yet. I simply knew I had a character whispering to me, hinting at her story which involved a missing sister, an imbalanced power structure, and a whole lot of angst.
Not too long after I finished that series, my editor asked me if I had any new ideas cooking, and I told her I’d need a couple days to dig into the character to see if I had anything worth pitching. That few days is when everything exploded for me. It’s one of my favorite parts of the writing process—the idea part—because this is the time when there are no expectations or boundaries. I simply head into my office, open a fresh notebook, and listen. And that female lead who’d been whispering to me had a hell of a lot to say…
