Leviathan Falls (The Expanse Book 9) – One Last Windmill

Leviathan Falls (The Expanse Book 9)

The Laconian empire is cracking apart, the mad emperor is missing, his heir is hiding out on the Rocinante with Holden and the gang, and Laconian Colonel Aliana Tanaka is out to find both daughter and emperor. If she’s lucky, she’ll get to kill Holden in the process. Elvi, the scientist we first met on Illus in Cibola Burn, is on a research ship in the middle of nowhere trying to get information from the Ring Founder’s library artifact, and watching the fabric of space unravel bit by bit as the Founder’s nemesis closes in.

After almost 3 years of waiting, the much-anticipated final Expanse novel is finally here, and the anticipation was totally justified. James S. A. Corey and the crew of the Rocinante bring it all together in a finale that makes all that’s come before worthwhile and gives us closure on the saga.

The Rocinante has been on the run for a year after scooping Holden up from his imprisonment at the heart of the Laconian empire, as well as helping the emperor’s daughter escape. The underground insurgency in the last book broke the empire’s grip on the Solar System and High Consul Winston Duarte, the protomolecule-ridden emperor, has taken off to parts unknown, leaving only the disturbing comment that he was thinking too small when he created the empire, but now he’s on the right track.

For High Admiral Trejo, getting the High Consul back is the most important thing in the universe, and he sends his most trusted asset, Colonel Aliana Tanaka, with the biggest blank check in the universe out to do the job.

To others, including Holden and Elvi, saving humanity from the Ring Maker’s killers takes center stage. That and staying alive. Elvi is on a research ship in the middle of nowhere trying to get information from the Ring Founder’s library artifact, and watching the fabric of space unravel bit by bit as the Founder’s nemesis closes in.

Between staying a step ahead of Colonel Tanaka and finding a way to keep from following the Ring Makers into extinction, there’s every kind of action you could ask for from mil-sf at its best addressing the big questions in the universe. And never a dull moment.

In the end, you know the crew of the Rocinante will stand up to be counted. Alex will guide the ship where it needs to go, following his heart. Naomi will take all the data and come up with a plan that might just work while trying to put Jim back together after years of torture. Amos will hold things together by sheer force of will, and provide the solid center that the crew relies on, while Holden does what he always does.

Picks out the biggest windmill and charges straight at it.

Neither the crew of the Rocinante nor the pair of writers that make up James S.A. Corey let us down. A fitting conclusion to the saga, and some nice surprises towards the end. Excellent and highly recommended.
