Convention Report
It’s no secret that this author loves comic con. No matter where they are. It can be in my home location of Fargo, North Dakota. Or, in some far off, “exotic” place like Manchester, England, I can’t get enough of comic con. MCM Manchester proved to be a huge success, as all of the cons put on by this group are. This two-day geeky festival took place on the 30th & 31st of July. It was everything that someone from most any fandom in the galaxy could be happy attending. Every genre was represented in full force – anime, cartoons, television, movies, even stage (those CATS folks show up everywhere), graphic novels, literature, and probably some I’m leaving out, but you get the idea.
With the recent upsurge in our sorts of movies, there was every imaginable conception of some of the more recent and current screen icons of geekdom. Harley Quinn and the Joker, who I might add have never been shy about showing up at a cons at all, were there in several different incarnations, as were a lot of their comrades from the new Suicide Squad movie. There were characters from the recent Star Wars film.
There were stars, of course, of the earthly kind – celebrities if you will. Most notable wast Robert Llewellyn, Kryten of Red Dwarf fame, discussing the revival of that popular show, which will begin airing in September. There was a huge Disney fandom presence, both old and new. Nearly every generation was represented. But enough jibber jabber from me. You came here for the costumes and cosplays, didn’t you? I want to offer a big special thanks to my new friend, Donald Manning, of Bristol, UK, for the great photos from MCM Manchester; all the credit for the photos goes to him. (That’s him in his Rude cosplay from final fantasy 7 in the featured image for this story). Enjoy the photos!
