Top 10 Sci-Fi Movies

top 10 sci-fi movies - Blade RunnerEveryone has a list of their top movies, I think it’s impossible to say what is your absolute favourite, even a top 10, but looking at one category makes it a little easier. So, here is my top 10 sci-fi movies. Some of you might not agree with these, but they are, after all, my choices. So why not share yours?

1. Blade Runner (1982)

I remember watching this is a lecture at university, my friends and I had been up all night, they had made a domino line of sleeping on each others shoulders, yet there I was at the end, wide awake unable to take my eyes off the screen. Being born the same year of the film and not being something my parents watched when it was on TV, I think I can be excused from not seeing it before. But is one that is in my Blu-ray collection, one that should be in every sci-fi fan’s collection.

2. The Matrix (1999)

I liked this film so much that I wrote my dissertation at university on it. I think this was another big milestone in sci-fi, and in fact, action films. The latest technology was used for this film and the mixture of mythology and religion confused and engaged many.

3. Inception (2010)

The first film in a long time to leave me walking out of the cinema generally excited for something other than the action in the film.

4. Superman (1978)

It made us believe a man can fly. He’s my favourite superhero, I love everything Superman related so this has to be in my top 10.

4. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

I thought this was a great end to the trilogy. Tom Hardy’s Bane was brilliant and their fights had me watching between my fingers.

5. Signs (2002)

This is one of my favourite alien invasion films, because it is all told from one family. We only see what they see. The aliens are barely on screen but knowing they are there makes it all the more scary.

6. The Sixth Sense (1999)

’99 was a good year for films that really excited audiences. The subtle hints in this film made me want to go back and watch it again immediately.

7. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

The perfect mix of zombies and comedy. Edgar Wright directing Simon Pegg and Nick Frost at their best.

8. The Avengers (2012)

I think I was more excited about the arrival of this film than I was the London Olympics. Whilst X-Men was the first blockbuster to bring us a gang of superheroes, this was the first film to bring together a collection who had already had their own solo films and throw in a few extra heroes.

9. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Just amazing, what more could you want when the sepia screen turns into the most colourful, wonderful world.

10. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

I felt that I needed a disaster movie in here. Whilst I’m sure many people will go for Independence Day I thought that The Day After Tomorrow was also worthy of being put in a top 10. Now, I know disaster movies often disappoint, but I really enjoyed the story of the people mixed with the armageddon that was taking place. The special effects were also impressive, remember the guy who literally froze as he opened the door to his helicopter?
