AutoNoMoUs Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 by Christopher L. Truxaw is an epic story of the near future. Especially the first two books in the series are not easy reads. There are many many characters and many of those characters operate under different names at different times. It is a complex and interesting world.
In the world of AutoNoMoUs, housing shortages and homelessness have been largely solved through the use of Abitats. Abitats are self-driving vehicles that are also self-contained homes. With interacting AI’s controlling them, they are both homes for many people, and vehicles for most folks. They remove the non-productivity of commuting and travel time, and by interacting with each other, greatly increase the efficiency of travel. In addition to the Abitats, a popular world simulation game has spread throughout society to the point where it has supplanted laws and government and monetary functions. This ‘game world’ expands the universe into multiple game universes. It enriches the environment of the novels, but it also complicates them even further. Several of the characters that already had multiple names in the ‘real’ world, now get multiple more names in the game worlds.
Part One introduces us to the world and the characters. They face various challenges, personal, professional, medical and others. Some are trying to reconcile lost pasts. Some are just trying to survive the present.
Part Two builds on the universe. A woman with her robotic assistant lost in the wilderness. A scientific team trying for a breakthrough. Teenagers at play in an amusement park. Multiple people struggling with loss and recovery of memories. The multiple story lines come together for a satisfying conclusion.
Part Three is the most readable of the books. This is a prequel to the story that gives the explanations for how the world of Autonomous 1 & 2 came to be. It is written from the POV of a single character’s journal entries and answers many of the questions that might have occurred to you in reading the first two parts.
As I mentioned, this not an quick and easy read, but if you are interested in a rich world with a series of interacting characters and stories, you could do far worse than AutoNoMoUs Parts One, Two and Three.
