Dark Angels: The Complete Works of Edward Bryant Volume Two is the second in a planned four(?) volume set celebrating the works of Edward Bryant.  Bryant’s publishing history began with a writing workshop he did with the great Harlan Ellison. Bryant wrote a story for the workshop, and Ellison offered to buy it immediately for an upcoming collection. That began a friendship that lasted decades, and the writing career of an amazing story teller.

This volume is focused mostly on Bryant’s Dark Fantasy and Horror stories. Many of these were published in magazines or other anthologies and have drifted out of the public’s consciousness. It is a shame how many  of these types of stories have been lost over the years. Belanger and Jean-Philippe Gervais are trying to make sure this does not happen with Edward Bryant.

The collection in Dark Angels focuses on his darker stories, but there is a surprising variety within the genre. There are dark comedy stories,  psychological thrillers, noir, not to mention monsters like werewolves and zombies.  If you are already a Bryant aficionado, you will be pleased to know the collection includes five stories that have not been printed before (Curtains, Fur Balls, Nick and Noira, A Slaying Song Tonight, Night of the Living).

I think I’ve come across a few of his stories over the years, but I was not very familiar with Bryant before beginning these complete works collections (On The Road To Cinnabar). I am glad that I am getting the chance to be immersed in his catalog. He deserves to be read and remembered. There are probably other writers like Bryant who focused on short stories and other collections and rarely made the cover page of the books.  How many authors and their stories were printed originally in a pulp or pin-up magazines, and have been lost to time, except for few random collectors?

This is your chance to read one of the best of those authors. If you like science fiction, start with volume one (On The Road To Cinnabar). If you like Dark Fantasy and Horror, then Dark Angels is your book. If you just like good stories, read them both then come back to volumes three and four in the future. I plan to.
