It’s Write-a-thon season: Clarion West and Clarion workshops sign up writers

Write-a-thonPlanning to tackle a writing project this summer? Now you can get your writing done with other writers and raise money for two of the world’s foremost non-profit writing workshops.*

Clarion West and Clarion invite you to write short stories, outline your novel, polish and submit fiction, or take on non-fiction writing projects such as book reviews and essays. Their Write-a-thon websites explain how to set your writing goals, create your online profile, and ask friends and colleagues for support.

Interested? Choose one of the two Write-a-thons (or both), sign up by the June 22 deadline, and write!

Clarion West in Seattle — They call it the “Shadow Workshop.” The intensive residential  workshop (with instructors Elizabeth Hand, Neil Gaiman, Joe Hill, Margo Lanagan, Samuel R. Delany and Ellen Datlow) runs June 23 through August 2. At the same time, Clarion West’s Write-a-thon participants will be “shadowing” the main workshop, pursuing independent writing projects and attracting sponsors to benefit Clarion West. See who’s writing for Clarion West (including Andrea Hairston, Cat Rambo, Nisi Shawl, Rachel Swirsky, and Steve Miller).

Clarion in San Diego — You can spend the summer writing in support of the Clarion Foundation in San Diego — which has set a goal of $18,000 for 2013. While Andy Duncan, Nalo Hopkinson, Robert Crais, Cory Doctorow, Karen Joy Fowler and Kelly Link teach the residential workshop, more than 200 Clarion alumni and supporters will be powering the Write-a-thon. Browse the Clarion writers list (which includes David Brin, Cory Doctorow, Eileen Gunn, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, John Kessel, and Kim Stanley Robinson).

Full disclosure: I’m a Clarion West board member and one of four Clarion West supporters offering a sign-up challenge for the Write-a-thon. We’ll each contribute $1 for each writer who signs up, up to 299 participants. If the Write-a-thon reaches its goal of 300 participants, our pledges automatically double to $600 each — a total of $2,400 for Clarion West.)
