I’ve always thought that US TV shows have the ground covered when it comes to science fiction TV shows (although the UK has the longest running show Doctor Who to brag about). But occasionally the UK produces some great new content. Being Human is one show, which was picked up and spun into a US version, although I decided to stop watching after Aiden Turner left the show to go and film the Hobbit instead (who can blame him). Misfits is another great show, which I’m surprised hasn’t been made into a US version yet.
Now a new show is on the scene – Utopia. This show is set around a graphic novel shrouded in mystery, which grabs the attention of a group of people, connected via an online comic book forum. They come together to look at an original manuscript and that’s when the drama starts happening. They are then targeted by an organisation known as The Network and the only way they can survive, when the every move is being watched, is to run.
It’s been picked up for a second season, so it could be making its way across the shores soon. The show seems to me a little bit Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels crossed with Being Human, but The Times referred to it as Twin Peaks crossed with No Country for Old Men and The Killing. I’ll leave that for you to decide, but think it is one worth checking out. It’s out on DVD and Blu-Ray in the UK now.
