Following a stint as assistant editor of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Ted edited Amazing Stories from 1968 until 1978, presiding over a come-back for the magazine and producing some of its most memorable stories and art; he also edited the graphic story magazine Heavy Metal for a period starting in 1979.

Ted is a long time fan of science fiction, having won a Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer in 1968; he produced a number of well-received fanzines including Stellar, Void & Egoboo.

He is also an author, having written a number of science fiction novels both independently and in collaboration with such authors as Marion Zimmer Bradley and Gregory Benford.
