It was recently announced that Apple would be imposing a 30% fee on all Patreon transactions conducted through Apple Apps, starting this coming November.
This means that if you sign on to our Patreon account using an Apple device App, 30% more of the monthly payment will go to Apple, not to us. (A fee is already applied by Patreon, but that is already built in to our system and calculations.)
Reporting on this development states that the new fee structure will NOT apply to existing accounts, only to new ones created after November. So, hint number one – if you’ve been thinking about supporting us through our Patreon account – sign up BEFORE November.
The other solution is, of course, for us to increase our fees across the board to compensate, but, as you can imagine, we’re reluctant to support Apple’s revenue grab (who produced the Amazing Stories TV show? Where did it briefly appear? Apple+, that’s where.)
We’ll monitor the situation come November and see where we’re at in terms of revenue loss. If that 30% hit looks to be negatively affecting us, we may very well have to raise fees. Or offer an alternative, though similar service.
To make this clearer: We’d have to increase a monthly tier fee of $10 to a bit under $15 in order to keep making $10 (less Patreon fees) after Apple takes its cut.
Which would mean a fifty percent hike to our customers. (Weird how the math works on that, huh?) A five dollar a month fee would have to become $7.50; a $25 per month fee would have to become $37.50….
So please, do yourself and us a favor when signing up to our Patreon, and don’t use the Apple app to do so.
