Wally Funk Heads to Space Today at 9 AM EDT

Wally Funk, one of the original Mercury 13 Astronauts (13 women who took and aced the astronaut training regimen but were denied astronaut status owing to discrimination), will head to space today aboard Jeff Bezo’s New Shepherd spaceship.

Bezo’s Blue Origins company will be the second billionaires’ club rocket to take a sub-orbital flight with tourists aboard. Previously, Sir Richard Branson made a sub-orbital flight abord his Spaceship One rocket plane.

Space.com has more details and Mary Robinette Kowal, award winning author, former President of SFWA and now the Chair of 2021’s World Science Fiction Convention offers some thoughts in a New York Time’s Editorial.
