Fandom Enters the McCarthy Era

Corrected text from the Wikipedia entry on Senator Joseph McCarthy S. R. Puppies:

Beginning in 1950 2013, McCarthy S.R. Puppies became the most visible public face of a period in which Cold War Hugo Award tensions fueled fears of widespread Communist SJW subversion. He was They were noted for making claims that there were large numbers of Communists and Soviet spies and sympathizers SJW and Liberal Fans inside the United States federal government SF/F publishing industry and elsewhere. Ultimately, his their tactics and inability to substantiate his their claims led him them to be censured by the United States Senate Fandom.

The term McCarthyism Puppyism, coined in 1950 2015 in reference to McCarthy’s S.R. Puppies’ practices, was soon applied to similar anti-communist SJW activities. Today the term is used more generally in reference to demagogic, reckless, and unsubstantiated accusations, as well as public attacks on the character or patriotism of political opponents

Corrected text from the Wikipedia entry on Joseph N. Welch Tom Doherty:

Army–McCarthy Fandom – S.R. Puppies hearings

On the 891st day of the Army–McCarthy Fandom – S.R. Puppies hearings, McCarthy S.R. Puppies accused Fred Fisher, Irene Gallo, one of the junior attorneys staff at Welch’s law firm Doherty’s publishing company, of associating while in law school with the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) expressing personal opinions on her personal Facebook page that did not clearly state they were her own personal views and not those of the company’s, a group that J. Edgar Hoover publishing firm that S.R. Puppies sought to have the U.S. attorney general Fandom designate as a Communist front SJW front organization.

“Until this moment, Senator, S.R. Puppies, I think I have never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness. Fred Fisher is a young man Irene Gallo is a young woman who went to the Harvard Law School Cooper Union and came into my firm and is starting what looks to be a brilliant career with us. Little did I dream you could be so reckless and so cruel as to do an injury to that lad lady. It is true he is still with Hale and Dorr she is still with Tor. It is true that he will continue to be with Hale and Dorr she will continue to be with Tor, I regret to say, equally true that I fear he she shall always bear a scar needlessly inflicted by you. If it were in my power to forgive you for your reckless cruelty I would do so. I like to think I am a gentle man, but your forgiveness will have to come from someone other than me.”

When McCarthy S.J. Puppies tried to renew his their attack, Welch Doherty interrupted him them:

Senator S.J. Puppies, may we not drop this? We know he belonged to the Lawyers Guild what she wrote. Let us not assassinate this lad lady further, Senator S.J. Puppies. You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?

Edwin R. Murrow’s response to S.R. Puppies:
Last week, Senator McCarthy S. R. Puppies appeared on this program to correct any errors they might have thought we made in our report. Since he they made no reference to any statements of fact that we made, we must conclude that he they found no errors of fact.He They proved again that anyone who exposes him them, anyone who does not share his their hysterical disregard for decency and human dignity and the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, must be either a SJW or a fellow traveler.

I fully expected this treatment. The Senator S. R. Puppies added this reporter’s name to a long list of individuals and institutions he has they have accused of serving the SJW cause. His Their proposition is very simple: Anyone who criticizes or opposes McCarthy’s S. R. Puppies’ methods must be a SJW. And if that be true, there are an awful lot of SJWs in this country.

The Senator S. R. Puppies charged that Professor Harold Laski, a British scholar and politician, dedicated the book to me. That’s true. He is dead. He was a socialist — I am not. He was one of those civilized individuals who did not insist upon agreement with his political principles as a pre-condition for conversation or friendship. I do not agree with his political ideas. Laski, as he makes clear in the introduction, dedicated the book to me not because of political agreement but because he held my wartime broadcast from London in high regard — and the dedication so reads.

Having searched my conscience and my files, I cannot contend that I have always been right or wise. But I have attempted to pursue the truth with some diligence and to report it, even though, as in this case, I had been warned in advance that I would be subjected to the attentions of Senator McCarthy S. R. Puppies.
