I Killed The King by Rebecca Mix and Andrea Hannah is a mystery set in a fantasy universe. After years of war, the kingdoms of Avendell and Istellia have agreed to peace… and sealing it with a marriage between the two royal families. A masquerade ball is going on to celebrate the unions. King Costis (of Avendell) gathers a group together in his chambers, but before he can reveal his intentions, the lights go out. When they come back on, the king is dead. This threatens the treaty that was to be signed in the morning, and sets the group off to find out who killed the king and why.  They have only until dawn or the peace may collapse, and maybe the kingdom.

Who killed the king is only one of several layers of mysteries that need to be solved before the final resolution.  Mix and Hannah do a good job of keeping you guessing and laying bread crumbs to follow, even if some of those don’t lead where they seem to lead. When you find out who did kill the king, you realize that you have only begun to unwrap the real questions.  They also do a good job of laying personal mysteries of most of the characters in with the overall mystery.

I really enjoyed  I Killed The King.  It is more a murder mystery than it is a fantasy.  There are fantasy elements, but it is not overwhelmed with magic as short cut. The characters are interesting, and believable in the context of the story. And the story is satisfyingly obtuse and explained by the end.  I recommend this one.
