A cosmic megastructure more than 9 billion light years away from Earth challenges what we know about the universe. A doctoral candidate at the United Kingdom’s University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has spotted a massive ring of galaxies roughly 1.3 billion light-years wide. According to our current understanding of the cosmos, a structure like this shouldn’t exist—but the fact that it does means we might not “get” space as well as we think.
