Interested in adding a little science fiction to your Thanksgiving weekend? A visit to Loscon 46 may be in order. Happening November 29–December 1 in Los Angeles, Loscon is a family-friendly convention featuring panel discussions, fan activities, a film festival, art show, and shopping, just in time for those holiday gifts you want to give others (or yourself).
This year, Loscon’s guests of honor will be award-winning writer Howard Waldrop (The Ugly Chickens, Them Bones), editor Moshe Feder (who has worked with a host of writers, including Isaac Asimov, Harlan Ellison, Hal Clement, Robert J. Sawyer, Robert Silverberg, Brand Sanderson), and fan guest of honor Edie Stern (webmaster of FANAC Fan History Project). Other guests include area artists and authors, such as Sean M. Carroll, Rick Sternbach, Steven Barnes, Harry Turtledove, Tananarive Due, Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff and Tim Powers.
In its 46thyear, Loscon is presented by the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, Inc. (LASFS), the world’s oldest continuously active science fiction and fantasy club. Founded Oct. 27, 1934, LASFS has included several members whose names are well-known to science fiction readers, among them Forrest J. Ackerman, Ray Bradbury, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. LASFS also helped organize the national write-in campaign that gave the original STAR TREK series its third season. The club continues to host weekly meetings.
In addition to the convention’s events and fun, Loscon will also include a Toy Drive in conjunction with Toys for Tots, a tradition since the early 1990s. Those who wish to donate can bring a toy, book, or art and craft kit to the Toy Drive station located across from the entrance to the Dealer’s room (new items only, not gift wrapped.)
Loscon is hosted at the recently redesigned Los Angeles Airport Marriott, located on Century Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport. Weekend memberships and room reservations are available at discounted rates before the convention. For updates, follow Loscon on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and search for #Loscon.
