SPECIAL SPECIAL NOTE:  The Experimenter Publishing Company has acquired the url.  Those wishing to use a more traditional address to reach the website may now do so.  Additionally, we have had for quite some time now.   Those typing on small keypads or screens may wish to use that shortened version.  Of course will still bring you here.

SPECIAL LITERATURE NOTE:  The owner of Amazing Stories (me) remains committed to printed books. We’re happy for authors who get published (or publish themselves) in whatever media they choose, but I reserve a special place and reverence for the printed work.  Just sayin.

Pick of the Week

Pick of the WeekMage: the Ascension 20th Anniversary Edition
by Onyx Path Publishing

SYSTEM: Storyteller / Storytelling

I tell you this: We are Divinity. Reality is ours to bend. To subvert. To command. We have that power – all of us. Not everyone knows what to do with it, or uses it well. Most of us never realize just what it is we are or how much we can do. Those of us who do well, some of us are monsters. Manipulators. Parasites. Tyrants. Fanatics.

And the rest of us never see that monster in our own mirror, only in the reflections of those folks who are not “us.” Here’s the truth, though: We are ALL “us.” We are ALL gifted, we can ALL change the world. Most of us remain asleep.

A blessed few Awaken. Fewer still use that power wisely. And none without consequences. And so, reality is up for grabs. Where do you stand?

And will you Fall… or Ascend?

What’s in Mage 20th?

• Updated profiles of the Council of Nine Traditions, the Technocratic Union, and the Disparate Crafts, with many unexpected developments

• An epic history of magick and its factions

• A compilation and clarification of essential and optional rules, including martial arts, vehicles, hazards, cybernetics, the Otherworlds, and far more besides

• Overviews of paradigms, practices and tools — the focus of your Art

• Detailed explorations of the epic concepts involved in Mage

• Chilling looks at the Nephandi and Marauders

• The Nine Spheres, plus their Technocratic variants

• Old favorites and new faces from among the Awakened Ones

• Reality Zones, Paradox, Quiet, the “coincidental vs. vulgar magick” debate, and far more

• New full-color original art by Michael William Kaluta, Echo Chernik, Steve Prescott, Christopher Shy, Larry MacDougall, and other classic Mage artists, as well as classic B&W pieces carefully chosen from the earlier editions

SYSTEM: D&D/d20 Modern

This new rules supplement provides everything players and Gamemasters need to create and run campaigns featuring cybernetics in the post-modern realm of cyberpunk fiction.

Building on the d20 Future cybernetic rules, d20 Cyberscape includes cybernetics and cyborgs, as well as new advanced classes and enhancements. d20 Cyberscape also features rules for magical and psionic cybernetics and virtual reality networks.

d20 Cyberscape (2005), by Owen K.C. Stephens, is a setting supplement for d20 Future (2004), which is itself a supplement for the d20 Modern (2002) roleplaying game.

d20 Cyberscape includes the standard expansions that you’d expect of a d20 Future supplement. There’s some nice integration with the Future Progress Levels, plus a set of three new advanced classes: the bionic agent, the cyberwarrior, and the implant hack.

d20 Cyberscape also contains extensive new rules systems for cybernetics and computer networks — including VRNet, previously a web enhancement for d20 Future. It even includes bizarre alternate cybertech, including fantasy cybernetics, horror cybernetics, bio-cybernetics, and nanotech — covering a variety of major subgenres of cyberpunk.

“…designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half-hour of high adventure…”
While stories of mystery and crime were the bailiwick of Suspense, Escape concentrated more on tales of high adventure — war, westerns, supernatural horror and science-fiction. Esteemed authors like Rudyard Kipling, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Arthur Conan Doyle, H.G. Wells, and Joseph Conrad provided much of the source material for the program, setting Escape apart from most of the other dramatic anthologies on the air at the time.
Escape benefited from an ensemble cast which included actor William Conrad – who lent his voice to 90 episodes in this gem of a series from Radio’s Golden Age. Following a distant second, actor Ben Wright lent his voice to a mere 56 episodes. Trailing in third place for the most performances on Escape, actor Harry Bartell voiced a variety of characters in 55 episodes, while John Dehner lent his voice to 54 episodes.
Known as being the voice of Escape, actor William Conrad once estimated that he portrayed more than 7,500 roles during his long career as a voice actor during Radio’s Golden Age. Conrad was not an idle boaster. He lent his distinct voice as a supporting cast member to such shows as The Man Called X, Favorite Story, The Voyage of the Scarlet Queen, The Green Lama, Nightbeat, and even Escape’s sister show, Romance. He also voiced Sheriff Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke. Conrad appeared in a record 90 episodes of Escape.
Escape featured one of radio’s most memorable openings, with either William Conrad or Paul Frees intoning: “Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you…ESCAPE!” The orchestra would then strike up Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” and, within seconds, the listener would be transported to a Caribbean jungle or to an icy glacier, effectively putting them in the shoes of that episode’s protagonist.

by Frederick C. Davis writing as Curtis Steele
Read by Milton Bagby

The mad Emperor, warrior descendant of the ravagers of Asia, unleashed a new, horrible, ingenious weapon against the American people. While slant-eyed Mongols bent over a powerful death-machine, a thousand miles away, the air became unbreathable! Men and women and children — all living things — gasped for life-giving oxygen, and with searing, heaving lungs, fell strangled by the mysterious, deadly element. Against these demoniacal hordes, one man alone — Operator #5 — struggles while red revolt and destruction blasts America!
Jimmy Christopher was the star of the most audacious pulp magazine ever conceived. Jimmy belonged to the clean-cut, square-jaw, clear-eyed breed of hero made popular by the F. B. I. back in those grim days. He carried a Colt automatic and wore a flexible rapier concealed in the hollow of his leather belt. A gold skull ornament dangled from a vest-pocket watch chain. It contained a fast-acting poison in case of capture by enemy agents. Jimmy Christopher played a very dangerous game, of which he was a past master.
Working for Agent Z-7, head of an unnamed branch of U. S. Intelligence in the decade before the C. I. A. was ever envisioned, Operator #5 was assisted by newspaper reporter Diane Elliott, a two-fisted street kid named Tim Donovan, as well as his twin sister, Nan Christopher. Jimmy’s father, a retired operative himself, often backed him up with sound advice on the fine art of counter-espionage.

Into this unprecedented crisis plunged Jimmy Christopher. Only one man, but a man who embodied the American spirit — and stands prepared to perish to protect his country.

The Green Death Mists is read with stirring intensity by Milton Bagby. Originally published in the November, 1934 issue of Operator #5 magazine.
