When You Love Science Fiction So Much, You Just Have To Write A Song

I think the first song I ever heard that not only had an SFnal theme, but was written specifically to entice listeners to engage with the genre, was the theme song for Sylvia and Gerry Anderson’s epic Supermarionation show Fireball XL5.

It was so catchy (in the mid-1960s) that it actually received a fair amount of radio play.  It featured in the closing credits of the show:

Since then, Science Fiction themed music has cropped up here and there, sometimes a song, sometimes an album, sometimes a whole thematic production involving stage show, costumes, album art and more, not to mention Fan’s own spin on the medium with Filk songs.

There’s been a Yes album, featuring the song Starship Troopers; Jefferson Starship’s Blows Against the Empire; Led Zeppelin’s The Battle of Evermore and Ramble On; David Bowies Martian Spiders, Major Tom; Queen’s Year of ’39; Sun Ra’s very SF-infused Jazz; Hawkwind’s offerings (working with the author Michael Moorcock), and, more recently Janelle Monae, with a more modern jazz take.

And now, now we are pleased to receive the works of someone who is obviously very tied in to the aesthetic and themes of earlier science fiction, if their album covers are anything to go by – SF-themed music from the band The Legendary Ten Seconds and their albums –

(You can find their works here.)

The band describes themselves as “Original English sixties pyschedelic folk rock music” on their Facebook page (check them out).

They also gave us permission to link to several of their songs, so here’s some free listens from The Legendary Ten Seconds and Amazing Stories.  (Stories, not songs, lol)

  1. When it comes to science fiction themed music, The Byrds, for me, were always at the forefront. Starting with 5D (Fifth Dimension) and Mr. Spaceman from the 1966 album, “Fifth Dimension” — CTA-102 from the 1967 album, Younger Than Yesterday” — Space Odyssey from the 1968 album, “The Notorious Byrd Brothers”.

Another obvious admission from the list was Elton John’s Rocket Man from the 1972 album, “Honky Chateau”.
