Hampus Eckerman is a Swedish systems developer, blogger and frequent commentor and contributor to File 770.
Last year he hosted a “movie bracket”, a vote in the comments playoff between various genre films.
A couple of weeks ago he offered up another one, this time centered on “cult movies”.
But what exactly is a cult movie? Does it have to be shown at midnight? Does it have to be a bad movie? Does it have to be black and white?
In his roll out post on the subject, Hampus offers some definitions:
- A Cult Movie is defined more by audience reaction than by the movie itself. Typically, there is a buzz about the movie that never quite reaches the mainstream. There is often a community aspect around the movies
- A Cult Movie isn’t about being good or bad. It is about being unique and memorable.
Filers then launched a massive nomination program and the initial round produced this list of films:
