Oscar Genre Nods

The Oscar nominations were announced in Hollywood this morning and, as usual, contain a few genre nominations for technical awards and none for the majors – unless you want to rope Birdman into the genre fold, where it arguably belongs at least in a meta sense.  (Seems that Hollywood will treat with films about people who have issues with superheroes, but not films about the superheroes themselves.)

This is an empty complaint in some respects since the Oscars are looking for and at things that usually keep films from being “popular” – which is usually the category most genre films fall into.  And there’s also that pesky “not comfortable with high tech” thing to take into account as well, especially when it comes to SF film.

But enough ruminating and pontificating;  here’s a list of the nominations for genre works:

Makeup – Guardians of the Galaxy

Costume – Into the Woods

Cinematography – Birdman

Original Screenplay – Birdman

Musical Score – Interstellar

Production Design – Interstellar

Sound Editing – The Hobbit: The battle of the Five Armies, Birdman, Interstellar

Sound Mixing – Interstellar, Birdman

Supporting Actor – Ed Norton, Birdman

Visual Effects – Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, X Men, Days of Future Past

Supporting Actress – Emma Stone, Birdman, Meryl Streep, Into the Woods

Best Actor – Michael Keaton, Birdman

Best Director – Birdman

Best Picture – Birdman

Best Animated Featured – Big Hero 6, How To Train Your Dragon 2

Thin pickings for 2014.
