Movie Review: Her

HerThis film might be a futuristic sci-fi but it doesn’t feel that far from the present. Her is about Theodore (Joaquin Phoneix – Walk the Line) who is separated from his wife and becomes a bit of a recluse. He purchases the latest operating software that learns and adapts to its owner. After answering a few questions and selecting a female operator he ends up with Samantha (the voice of Scarlett Johnansson – Avengers). Ask Samantha develops Theodore starts to have feelings for her and Samantha, although an operating system starts to feel the same and they embark on a relationship.

Samantha is a further developed version of the Apple Siri, and whilst I can’t see anyone having a crush on Siri, watching this film I can see how it could be possible. But at the end of the day, Samantha is still a piece of software and can she really feel exactly what a human can feel? As a piece of software is she also his personal operating system? I’ve had a bit of banter with Siri on my iPhone, but I know his responses to my programmes have been programmed and if my friend ask’s Siri on their phone they will get the same response.

Spike Jonze (Where the Wild Things Are) has made an unusual romantic movie but it is beautiful told. This film is a subtle example of what will possibly be if technology continues to develop the way it is. It’s not an action film of machines taking over like The Matrix, I, Robot but it is actually probably one of the more realistic examples of what may be in our future.
