HUGO AWARD NOMINATIONS: ONE WEEK TO GO

In NASA parlance, T-minus 7 days and counting!

The Hugo Administrators (may the odd gods of the galaxy take mercy on them!  May Ghu and Roscoe save them from punnish harm) have announced that there remains but one week to go to submit your nominations for the 2016 Hugo Awards (given to works from 2015) and the 2016 Retro Hugo Awards (given to works from 1940).

Full details available on the MidAmericonII website.

The Hugo Award Administrators STRONGLY urge eligible nominators to test their login information NOW.  Individuals should have received their registration and pin numbers via email at this point.  If you have not, or if you can not log in with the provided information, please contact the Hugo Awards Administrators SOONER rather than later.

STRONG PLUG FOR PARTICIPATION

If you are eligible to nominate:  DO SO

But I can’t fill up a category!  THEN NOMINATE AS MANY AS YOU CAN (5 nominations per category is the max, not the minimum)

But I can’t place anything in some categories!  THEN NOMINATE IN THOSE YOU CAN MAKE KNOWLEDGEABLE CHOICES (you don’t have to fill out the whole ballot)

I’m not sure if what I like is good enough to nominate!? IF YOU THINK IT WORTHY, NOMINATE.  (This is not a popularity contest.  No points are given for how closely your picks resemble the winners)

Someone sent me a slate and said I should just copy it onto the form… DON’T.  NOMINATE YOUR CONSCIENCE. NOMINATE YOUR PERSONAL LIKES.

I think so-and-so is a poopy head.  I’m going to put them below No Award.  DON’T.  NOMINATE FOR SOMETHING, NOT AGAINST SOMETHING

I can’t think of anything to put in any category, so I’m just going to fill up the ballot with random picks. EVERYONE IS FREE TO NOMINATE HOWEVER THEY WISH TO.  HOWEVER, WELL-CONSIDERED NOMINATIONS HELP IMPROVE THE PROCESS FOR EVERYONE

I wasn’t around in 1941, how can I nominate for the Retro Hugos?  MOST OF US WEREN’T.  FORTUNATELY, MANY OF US HAVE PROVIDED RESOURCES TO HELP YOU OUT.

Why all the fuss about a plastic rocket?  THEY AREN’T PLASTIC.  THEY ARE AMONG THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS IN THE FIELD

Bloc voting?  Cabals? PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE BLATHER.  NOMINATE YOUR CONSCIENCE

  1. Daniel – actually, you could not be more wrong.

Unless one strongly disagrees with an entire category, its rare to see No Award during the nomination process – which is where we’re at right now.

On the Final Ballot (the one that determines the winners), No Award has been an option from the beginning and has nothing to do with the political agenda I presume you are trying to advance with your comment.

I hope you are able to grasp the distinction: a ”
slate” requires, among other things, a coordinated voting effort. Those who voted for No Award last year did so as independent individuals.

Wow. THOUSANDS of fans all independently arriving at the same conclusion: that they didn’t want the Hugo Awards gamed or politicized.

Its one thing to be told by a small, coordinated group that they don’t like what’s being done. But its an order of magnitude (at least one) when the entire community stands up and says “no”.

Daniel, you’re welcome to comment here, but please be careful not to confuse puppy-thinking with reality. They’re not the same.
