ILLUSIONOID is a funny throw-back to the classic sci-fi radio broadcasts of the 20s and 30s. Hilarious and spot-on.”

Mike Sachs, Vanity Fair editor and author of And Here’s the Kicker, Your Wildest Dreams… Within Reason

Toronto, ON (January, 2013) – An all-star cast of Toronto improvisers have reached an international audience with the release of their wildly successful science fiction-themed comedy podcast, ILLUSIONOID. The bi-weekly podcast series launched on August 15, 2010 and has grown exponentially with each subsequent episode.

After winning Bad Dog Theatre’s highly competitive annual “Globehead” improv tournament in Toronto in February of 2010 and repeating in 2012, a troupe consisting of Paul Bates (CTV’s Dan For Mayor, Second City Toronto), Nug Nahrgang (Dark Rising: Summer Strikes Back, SyFy’s Scare Tactics) and Lee Smart (Comedy Network’s 5th Quadrant, Second City Toronto) decided to create and launch a new project. As many of their stage scenes took a decidedly science fiction theme, they found inspiration in vintage television shows including The Twilight Zone and Tales From The Crypt and radio serials like X Minus One and Inner Sanctum Mysteries.

Seeking to reintroduce audiences to the feel of these lost classics, the trio began to self-produce a new show using the modern technologies of Apple computers and Garageband to create the hilariously moody, melodramatic and retro sound effect-laden ILLUSIONOID.

Listeners of the podcast have flocked to the campy, sci-fi world of ILLUSIONOID which chronicles a time in the distant future where humanity is forced to take its final stand against the tyrannical computer after which the show is named.

Since launch, the trio has gained celebrity fans including Sean Cullen (NBC’s Last Comic Standing, The Producers) and Colin Mochrie (Who’s Line Is It Anyway?), both of whom are now featured as guest stars on ILLUSIONOID episodes. Kids In The Hall’s Scott Thompson and Futurama’s Billy West have also been guests and the troupe is looking for more in the months to come.

New episodes of the show are released every two weeks and are often based on suggestions from listeners of the podcast. Live performances and recordings have occurred at Toronto’s Comedy Bar and there are plans to tour show nationally in 2013. The show can be found on iTunes and at www.illusionoid.com
