Film Review: Maleficent

Malificent_Angelin_2923266bI loved Wicked the musical (I was lucky enough to see Idina Menzel as Elphaba in the West End show), so was looking forward to seeing the story of another ‘evil’ character to see how she was misunderstood.

I’ve always thought Maleficent was the most evil of them all, growing up watching Sleeping Beauty many a time as a child and with Angelina Jolie playing her in the movie Maleficent I had to wonder just how evil she was going to be.

I loved how this classic fairytale was taken and spun on its head. The king had been greedy and evil, so from seeing things from Maleficent’s side you can see why she did what she did. However, being purely evil is just not something she can live up to.

Angelina Jolie is truly amazing in this role as well. Not only does she bring the classic Disney cartoon character to life in a believable manner (much like Glenn Close’s Cruella de Vil), but she also shows the raw emotion of this fairy turned evil witch.

This film Disney at its best. Not just one for kids and families, but grown ups will love it too.
