Where does it come from? Cometary debris.
What does it mean? Could be heralding the apocalypse, but more likely it’s a typical display of the forces of nature and physics. (On the other hand, if a giant fiery ball from the sky impacts the ground, pops open and reveals a greenly glowing viscous interior, it’s probably not a good idea to poke it with a stick.)
