AMAZING News October 27-28, 2013

SPECIAL NOTE:

The AMAZING News feature appears today as a result of yesterday’s site maintenance.  News will return to its regularly schedule date this Sunday, November 3rd.  Fan related organizations and publishers of genre-related subjects are, as always, welcome and encouraged to send in their news items for inclusion here.  Please send press releases and newsletters to the PR(at)amazingstoriesmag(dot)com email address. TIME MACHINE and ABSOLUTE ZERO will also return November 3rd.

ANOTHER SPECIAL NOTE:

Amazing Stories is currently in the process of sending out a new advertising rate card to small press and indie author outlets.  Box and Leaderboard spaces (300×250 and 720×90 respectively) are currently in LIMITED availability (the number of ads in rotation is restricted in order to deliver a MINIMUM number of ad impressions per ad per day, along with an associated number of unique visitors).   A variety of additional benefits are associated with this program, including scheduling reviews. profiles and interviews related to your advertising.  The rate card will shortly be available for download here on the site (INFO/Advertising on the main menu) and may also be obtained by emailing Advertising(at)amazingstoriesmag(dot)com.  This program is very affordable, delivers a very targeted audience and has been designed to accommodate the limited promotional budgets of most small press and indie author clients.

Some Early Reviews

“What makes The Wolf at the End of the World such an engrossing read are the characters and Doug’s wonderful prose, a perfect blend between matter-of-fact and lyricism. I can’t remember the last time I read a book that spoke to me, so eloquently, and so deeply, on so many levels. … I’ll be rereading it in the future because it’s that sort of book. Richly layered and deeply resonant. An old friend, from the first time you read it.”
—Charles de Lint, World Fantasy Award winner

“Five stars. … I love a story that hits all the emotional buttons from laughter to tears. When that happens, it goes without saying the writing is good and the story is engaging, the characters are deep enough to make me feel. … Given the number of awards Douglas has won for his short stories, it’s hardly surprising he’s written such a fabulous book, and it’s lovely to be able to say so unreservedly. I really enjoyed The Wolf At The End Of The World, and I’m happy to have a copy to put on my shelf. With adventure, intrigue, shape-shifters, family, a touch of romance and a lot of heart, this is a book I’d recommend for readers of all genres.”
—Kelly Jensen, SF Crowsnest Reviews

From the Back Cover

A shapeshifter hero battles ancient spirits, a covert government agency, and his own dark past in a race to solve a murder that could mean the end of the world.

The Heroka walk among us. Unseen, unknown. Shapeshifters. Human in appearance but with power over their animal totems.

Gwyn Blaidd is a Heroka of the wolf totem. Once he led his people in a deadly war against the Tainchel, the shadowy agency that hunts his kind. Now he lives alone in his wilderness home, wolves his only companions.

But when an Ojibwe girl is brutally killed in Gwyn’s old hometown, suspicion falls on his former lover. To save her, Gwyn must return, to battle not only the Tainchel, but even darker forces: ancient spirits fighting to return to our world…

And rule it.

Cree and Ojibwe legends mix with current day environmental conflict in this fast-paced urban fantasy that keeps you on the edge of your seat right up to its explosive conclusion.

An excerpt of the first four chapters of the novel is available on my website.

Spirit Dance

THE WOLF AT THE END OF THE WORLD is based on my award-winning story, “Spirit Dance,” picking up events five years later. You do NOT need to have read “Spirit Dance” to fully enjoy THE WOLF, but if you’re interested, you can pick up “Spirit Dance” from my website store or all the major ebook retailers either as an individual ebook or as part of my collection, IMPOSSIBILIA.

Paolo Bacigalupi’s debut collection demonstrates the power and reach of the science fiction short story. Social criticism, political parable, and environmental advocacy lie at the center of Paolo’s work. Each of the stories herein is at once a warning, and a celebration of the tragic comedy of the human experience.

The eleven stories in Pump Six represent the best Paolo’s work, including the Hugo nominee “Yellow Card Man,” the nebula and Hugo nominated story “The People of Sand and Slag,” and the Sturgeon Award-winning story “The Calorie Man.”

AnderZone
Hi ,
You know how when a new school year begins, kids are often asked to write “what I did this summer”? I planned to do that for you—and now it’s late October.

This summer was a whirlwind of deadlines. Since my last email to you, I finished Mentats of Dune with Brian Herbert (due out March 2014), The Dark Between the Stars, first in a new “Seven Suns” trilogy (due out June 2014), humorous fantasy The Dragon Business (which Amazon will serialize beginning November 2013), Hellhole Infernowith Brian (due out August 2014), and the fourth Dan Shamble, Zombie PI novel, Slimy Underbelly (due out September 2014); I also edited A Fantastic Holiday Season (available now). Sometimes it felt like a marathon!

I made a lot of appearances, too. Rebecca & I were featured guests at ComicPalooza in Houston; Denver Comic Con; the Campbell Conference in Lawrence, Kansas (where I received the first Lifeboat to the Stars award for my book Tau Ceti, with Steven Savile); the Colorado Book Awards in Aspen, CO (whereClockwork Angels was nominated); Libertycon in Chattanooga, TN; San Diego Comic-Con (where Clockwork Angels won the Scribe Award); Dragon*Con in Atlanta; and Salt Lake City Comic Con. I was also inducted as a member of the Board for the Lifeboat Foundation as well as the Challenger Centers for Space Science Education.

Fortunately, it wasn’t all work. I did manage to get out into my beautiful Colorado mountains for some spectacular hikes. I climbed two “Fourteeners”—Mount Bierstadt (14,060 ft) and Quandary Peak (14,265 ft)—and completed three more segments of the Colorado Trail (48 miles, total). We also faced some natural disasters: one of the largest wildfires in Colorado history swept within miles of our house, and we were on evacuation standby with all of our irreplaceable possessions packed in cars, ready to go at a moment’s notice. And while the severe floods a few months later did not affect our house, they did cause major damage to the town of Estes Park deep in the Rocky Mountains, where I often go to hole up in my writing cabin.  And now the leaves are turning, and the high country is already covered with snow….

Since it’s close to Halloween, you might enjoy reading about Dan Shamble, Zombie PI. My story “Road Kill” is 99¢ in all eBook formats, worldwide, and also available in audio. And as a special offer to my international readers, the first Dan Shamble novel, Death Warmed Over, is FREE until October 30 (offer valid outside US and Canada only) onKobo. Use promo code SHAMBLEON.

Finally, for four years now, my brother-in-law and hiking companion T. Duren Jones (a.k.a. Tim) and I have produced a calendar of our best photographs of the wilderness, along with “tales from the trails” of our adventures out in the mountains. We print these calendars for family, friends, and colleagues. This year, we’ll also make these special calendars available to any of you who are interested. The print run is limited to 250 copies, each one autographed. Cost is US $20 + shipping. You can order from the top left corner of my blog, if you’d like one. Click here to go there!

Enjoy the beautiful autumn, and until next time, keep reading!

OCTOBER 2013

A Study in Silks

From the Desk of Del Rey Editor Mike Braff

Dear Readers,

Like many of you, I consider myself to be an epic fantasy aficionado. Some might see our tastes in the genre as a bit close-minded or even a mite snobbish. Fair enough, but I think that while good epic fantasy can be amazing, the less favorable variety can be terrible; if I’m going to invest significant amounts of time in a fantasy series that sprawls vast periods of time and space, I want it to be awesome all around! To that end I’ve identified several negative tropes that we see far too much in fantasy submissions. While none of these are dealbreakers unto themselves, seeing any one of the below in a submitted manuscript gives me significant pause. Maybe you’ll agree?
