The End of Oak Street is a recent science fiction survival film written, co-produced, and directed by David Robert Mitchell. It stars Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery as a family whose suburban neighborhood has been transported from 1982 into the age of dinosaurs.
Disclaimer: I like Anne Hathaway and I like dinosaurs.
I went into this movie not expecting a whole lot, and I was not disappointed. There is not a huge amount of story to the story. A brief set up of a family in turmoil as mom and dad are not getting along. Mom wanting more out of life, then a bunch of dinosaurs intervene and its mostly a chase scene, running away from one dinosaur or other prehistoric beastie or another. The dinosaurs are reasonably well done, though more of them are fuzzier than I would have thought. I also suspect that the time-travel thing doesn’t really work. Many of these critters did not coexist at the same time. There were millions of years between some of these creatures, but somehow they are all in the same movie.
I can’t really recommend this movie. The plot is thin. The resolution is overly convenient and overly cheesy. The dinosaurs are pretty cool whether or not they scientifically accurate. Anne Hathaway looks good as she runs from critters, and she’s not forced to push her acting skills outside of her bounds.
Overall, I hate to admit it, but I liked this movie. I can’t recommend it, but I liked it. Silly, pointless, but cool dinosaurs, Anne Hathaway and an air conditioned theater.
