At Winter’s End by Robert Silverberg is set several hundred thousand years in the future. Earth has spent the last several millenium being pummeled by ‘death stars’ – comets, asteroids or other meteors that have rained down. This has caused an ongoing and recurring ‘winter’ making the surface of the planet uninhabitable. A small colony of ‘people’ has survived for these millenium by following strict rules on breeding and living. At 35 years-old they are forced from the cocoon to die in the cold on the surface to make room for new generations.
There have long been prophesies of the ‘end of winter’ when the colony can come up from underground and travel to the remnants of a great city to take their place as the new leaders of the world. When they (probably) receive the signal that it is time, they begin their journey.
I can’t say this is an amazing story, but it is a solid story. A story of discovery and wonder. Silverberg creates an interesting universe mixing the natural occurring changes to a world subject to cosmic bombardment and extremely long periods of time mixed with the remains of ancient civilizations. He brings the personal lives of the people together with the social pressures of a new world that they don’t quite understand. The conflicts and adjustments to new creatures, new races, new challenges, new ideas.
