The Locus Anthology Kickstarter Is Live!

We’re delighted to announce that Locus Magazine is launching an annual Best of anthology series—and you can help us bring it to life via Kickstarter.

Explore worlds of fireflies and eco-activism, with sapphic knights and dreamlike kingdoms, where digital people live with us as equals, poltergeist hauntings are tied to radioactive soil, trans women transform into powerful beings righting injustices, and writers survive in a world without freedom of speech… all of this and so much more in the inaugural Locus Best Science Fiction & Fantasy of the Year.

You can help make this book real – with award-winning stories from the 2025 Locus Recommended Reading List, including Thomas Ha’s Locus Award-winning and Hugo Award-nominated short story “In My Country” and Somto Ihezue’s Nebula and Locus Award-winning novelette “We Begin Where Infinity Ends”, plus standout stories by Isabel J. Kim, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Sarah Pinsker, B Pladek, Esther Alter, and many, many more.

We’ve seen a steady decline in the number of Best Of anthologies being published over the past few years. These compilations are a longstanding tradition in SFF and are so important in guiding readers to new authors, showcasing a top tier selection of science fiction, fantasy, and horror stories, novelettes, and novellas.

They also do something no single magazine issue, no algorithm, and no individual critic can do: they shape the memory of a year in literature.

A core mission of Locus is to create a space where science fiction, fantasy, and horror can thrive. A Year’s Best anthology based on our annual Recommended Reading List just makes sense… and helps build up the whole genre. You can be a part of it – building what we hope will become the first volume in a long-running series.

We’ve selected the stories and the authors are on board – provided we get the funding.
