NASA’s Mission To Save The SWIFT Space Telescope

In a first for NASA, a robotic salvage vehicle will be launched sometime in the next few days to rendezvous with the SWIFT space telescope, grapple on and boost the satellite to a higher orbit.  China has previously performed this feat with one of their own satellites.

SWIFT’s orbit has been decaying from the influence of increased solar activity.

The mission began only last October, when NASA contracted with KATALYST aerospace firm, asking them to perform a “rush” job, so long as they “didn’t make things worse”.
