The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert is a very interesting book going through the previous 5 global extinction events that were likely caused by such things as asteroid strikes, prehistoric global warming and glaciations…and other natural events. ..and the sixth extinction event that is going on right now and is being caused by a prevalent ‘weed’ species that has invaded natural environments all over the globe and is killing off the native species wherever they go.
If it’s not obvious to you, we are that invasive species and from direct hunting, to clearing land, to paving land, to carrying other invasive species with us as we move from place to place to altering the global climate by spewing megatons of carbon and other chemicals into the air and into the rest of the environment, we are literally driving thousands and thousands of species to extinction. Many we already have, beginning in our prehistoric days where wherever we went, the large land mammals disappeared shortly thereafter. And we continue to drive species to extinction on a daily basis.
It is not a happy book. It describes but it does not prescribe. It does not give any real strategies to stopping the extinctions. It tells you what is actually happening.
It is definitely worth the read and makes you think. And maybe if enough people realize what we are doing to the environment, and if more of them realize we are indirectly doing it to ourselves as well, maybe we can make some changes to at least slow the extinctions and perhaps prevent our own.
