Another Week and…

Sorry, but I’ve no new details to share regarding the TV show;  we’re down to seemingly one item that I’m hoping we can find some compromise on.

It’s kinda not funny that in some ways I’m feeling something akin to what the women taken advantage of by powerful men in Hollywood are feeling;  it’s not anywhere near as terrible…we’re talking a company and a name versus living, breathing people, but

it’s all part and parcel of what seems to be a very sick culture out there in la-la land.  And I don’t mean the liberalism.

When you spend all day in a toxic environment that encourages people to abuse their power and influence…when your daily negotiating involves resorting to threats to remove opportunity; when you routinely leverage the knowledge that your money can shield you from legal action…when your purpose in life is to negotiate unfairly and to share credit as little as possible,

I don’t think it surprising at all that some individuals mistakenly believe they can apply those same behaviors to every other aspect of their life.  Weinstein, Price, perhaps Afleck, perhaps Stone, no doubt others, are not outliers, their actions are not some bizarre aberration…they’re doing what they’ve been encouraged to do and have learned over decades that they can do, safely and even, sickeningly, approvingly.

Minka Kelly, (actress, genre credits include Almost Human) who just revealed an “uncomfortable” encounter with Weinstein, seems to acknowledge this in the following statement:

“No more Harvey Weinstein in Hollywood does not solve the problem,” she wrote, “but maybe the more voices sharing their stories and adding support to the countless women and men who have suffered through abuse of power, the less it will be tolerated.” (Huffington Post) (emphasis added)

Who else is going to go under the microscope?  Time will tell, though I’m pretty sure of one thing:  right now, there are a lot of people in Hollywood, a lot of women, and men, who are talking up a storm about this power monger, that mogul and that time that….

I’ve no doubt that Weinstein and Price are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, which means, if proportion holds true, we’re still waiting for somewhere between 4 and 6 more major revelations from tinsel town.

Who is gonna fall?  What major studios and projects are they going to take down with them?  How many other innocents are going to be irreparably harmed during the process?  The real question is whether all of this in its gory detail will bring about change to the underlying culture, or if this is just an opportunity for wannabes to step into the shoes of the fallen.

  1. I fear for the young actors and actresses that I know who just want to have a career. Who have been unable to make ends meet here in Seattle and are taking their hopes and dreams with them to Hollywood. “All the gold in California is in the bank in somebody else’s name.” Truer words cannot be spoken. I just pray that they are not swallowed by the whale and find their lives shattered instead.
