OTHER WORLDS THAN THESE BY JOHN JOSEPH ADAMS IS AVAILABLE FOR $1.99 ON AMAZON, BARNES & NOBLE, AND MORE!

What if you could not only travel any location in the world, but to any possible world? We can all imagine such “other worlds”–be they worlds just slightly different than our own or worlds full of magic and wonder–but it is only in fiction that we can travel to them. From The Wizard of Oz to The Dark Tower, from Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass to C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, there is a rich tradition of this kind of fiction, but never before have the best parallel world stories and portal fantasies been collected in a single volume–until now… read more

Juggling Projects—from Rush to Hollywood to Dune
It’s the glamorous part of being an author: I just spent hours at the kitchen table while watching Daredevil on Netflix, autographing and autographing and autographing, about 600 sheets for the signed numbered and lettered edition of the Gauntlet Press special release of Working Stiff: The Cases of Dan Shamble, Zombie PI, which comes out in September. The special edition includes a new introduction by me, an afterword by bestselling author Jonathan Maberry, and as a bonus the never-before-published complete 40-page comic script for the Dan Shamble/Kolchak the Night Stalker comic, cowritten with Richard Dean Starr, to be published by Moonstone Comics. The numbered and lettered copies of the Gauntlet edition of Working Stiff will probably sell out quickly; they’re available for preorder now from Gauntlet Press.
On the Writing
I just delivered Draft 2 of Navigators of Dune to Brian Herbert for his next editing pass. This wraps up the Schools of Dune trilogy that began with Sisterhood of Dune and continued in Mentats of Dune. And this morning I received the last story in my new anthology for ECW Press, 2113: Stories Inspired by the Music of Rush, 18 great science fiction and fantasy tales including my own novelette 2113. Next, I’m about the tackle the heavy lifting of my next really big project, Eternity’s Mind, the third book in The Saga of Shadows trilogy. Book 1, The Dark Between the Stars, was recently nominated for the Hugo Award. Book 2, Blood of the Cosmos, will be out in June.
Writers of the Future
Rebecca and I just got back from Hollywood where we were instructors and presenters at the Writers of the Future Awards. We’ve been doing this for many years. It’s a gratifying experience, and many of our students have gone on to become major writers in their own right. Besides, the event gives us a chance to dress up and enjoy a moment in the limelight onstage. In this year’s volume of the prize winners, Rebecca and I also have a collaborative story, “Rough Draft”—one of our best.

Upcoming Appearances

Caribbean Comic Con: May 1–3, 2015 in Puerto Rico (with Rebecca)

Denver Comic Con: May 23–25, 2015 in Denver, CO (with Rebecca)

FanExpo: May 29–31 2015 in Dallas, TX (Kevin only)

New Books

And for your immediate reading enjoyment, I just released two short stories: Clockwork Lives: The Bookseller’s Tale, which is the first standalone piece of my forthcoming steampunk fantasy Clockwork Lives with Neil Peart. This story will give you a great taste of what that novel will be like. And, also in a musical vein, multiple Grammy winner Janis Ian and I wrote a humorous dark fantasy story, “Dark Carbuncle,” about a dead one-hit-wonder rock star whose die-hard fans won’t let him rest in peace. Each story is available in any eBook format for $2.99.

Meanwhile, now that I’m done autographing all those signature sheets, time to get back to writing.
Until next time, keep reading!

Hugo Award Nominations!

Awards season continues, and we are pleased to announce that Lightspeed is again a Hugo Award finalist for best semiprozine. We’re extremely honored to be nominated again (that’s five times in a row for Lightspeed, and of course we won it last year), so please allow me to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who voted for us. Also, frequent Lightspeed illustrator Elizabeth Leggett is a finalist for best Fan Artist. And finally, Thomas Olde Heuvelt’s story, “The Day the World Turned Upside Down” is up for best novelette. You can see a full list of the other nominees at sasquan.org/hugo-awards/nominations.

In other awards news, this year’s Nebula Awards voting has now closed. As you probably know, “We Are the Cloud” by Sam J. Miller (Lightspeed, September 2014) is a finalist for the Nebula Award for best novelette. You can find the full slate of nominees at sfwa.org/nebula-awards. The Nebulas will be presented at the 50th annual Nebula Awards Weekend, held this year in Chicago, Illinois, June 4–7.

The End Has Come, volume 3 of The Apocalypse Triptych, is Now Available!

The final installment of The Apocalypse Triptych — the apocalyptic anthology series I’m co-editing with Hugh Howey — is now available. The new volume, The End Has Come, focuses on life after the apocalypse. The two volumes, The End is Nigh (about life before the apocalypse) and The End is Now (about life during the apocalypse) are also available. If you’d like a preview of the anthology, you’re in luck: You can read Annie Bellet’s The End Has Come story in the May issue of Lightspeed. Pop over there to read it, or visit johnjosephadams.com/apocalypse-triptych for more information about the book.

Operation Arcana Edited by John Joseph Adams is Now Available!

ICYMI, in March, Baen published Operation Arcana, my new anthology of military fantasy. Operation Arcana contains sixteen never-before-published tales (about 100,000 words of material), from Glen Cook, Myke Cole, Genevieve Valentine, Elizabeth Moon, Django Wexler, Weston Ochse, Yoon Ha Lee, Jonathan Maberry, Tobias S. Buckell & David Klecha, Ari Marmell, Tanya Huff, Carrie Vaughn, T.C. McCarthy, Simon R. Green, Seanan McGuire, and Linda Nagata.

The stories run the gamut from military epic fantasy to military urban fantasy to military historical fantasy — and everything in between. You’ll find a reprint of Linda Nagata’s story, “The Way Home,” in the March issue of Lightspeed. If you’d like to learn more about the book, read additional stories from the anthology for free online, or read interviews with the authors, visit my Operation Arcana website at johnjosephadams.com/operation-arcana.
Wastelands 2 Edited by John Joseph Adams is Also Now Available!

Also recently released was Wastelands 2, the sequel to my bestselling — and first! — anthology, Wastelands. It contains nearly 200,000 words of fiction, including stories by George R.R. Martin, Seanan McGuire, Hugh Howey, Nancy Kress, David Brin, Ann Aguirre, Paolo Bacigalupi, Lauren Beukes, and Junot Díaz, among others. Learn more about it at johnjosephadams.com/wastelands-2.
Speaking of Wastelands, Titan also just recently released the original Wastelands in mass market paperback edition. So if you’ve been wanting to read it all these years and just couldn’t abide paying more than $7.99 for it, now’s your chance!
If You Love Your Subscription, Review Your Subscription!

If you already have and love a Lightspeed subscription, please consider leaving us a positive review on Amazon.com or Weightless Books. A few kind words can go a long way toward encouraging other readers to try out Lightspeed if they’re on the fence about whether to give it a shot or not.

If you’d like to leave a review, here’s the product page on Amazon.com, and here’s the 12-month subscription option on Weightless Books.

Reviews of individual issues are also welcome, of course, though our primary interest is in spreading the word about subscriptions, so if you want to help out, please let other readers know what you think!
Have Your Tried Our Sister-Magazine, Nightmare, Yet?

Have you checked out our sister-magazine Nightmare yet? Because of the ubiquity of gory horror movies, when a lot of people think of the horror genre in literature, they imagine it deals with that same kind of gory slasher-type stories we typically see in film, full of blood and guts and generally a lot of awfulness. But literary horror is rarely like that, and the fiction in Nightmare basically never is. The fiction in Nightmare tends toward “quiet horror”: that is, the stories are literary and dark—at times visceral, and at times unsettling. In other words, not overly dissimilar from the stories you’d find in Lightspeed—just more toward the darker end of the literary spectrum.
By the way, ICYMI, Nightmare is now available as a subscription via Amazon.com! The Kindle Periodicals division has been closed to new magazines for quite a while now (and has been since before Nightmare launched), but by employing some witchcraft we were able to get the doors unlocked just long enough for us to slip into the castle. Amazon subscriptions are billed monthly, at $1.99 per issue, and are available now. To learn more, please visitnightmare-magazine.com/subscribe.

Pop on over to www.nightmare-magazine.com to check out the magazine, purchase issues or subscribe, or just for more information and updates (or to subscribe to the free Nightmarenewsletter).

Looking Ahead: Issue 61

Coming up in June, in Lightspeed . . .

It’s our anniversary, and we’ve made another special double issue for you: Queers Destroy Science Fiction! We’ve brought together a team of terrific queer creators and editors, led by Guest Editor and best-selling author, Seanan McGuire. We’ll have eleven pieces of original science fiction by exciting SF authors: Susan Jane Bigelow (“Die, Sophie, Die”), Chaz Brenchley (“The Astrakhan, the Homburg and the Red Red Coal”), John Chu (“勢孤取和 (Influence Isolated, Make Peace)”), Felicia Davin (“The Tip of the Tongue”), Amal El-Mohtar (“Madeleine”), Kate Galey (“Emergency Repair”), K.M. Szpara (“Nothing is Pixels Here”), Jessica Yang (“Plant Children”), Tim Susman (“Two by Two”), Bonnie Jo Stufflebeam (“Trickier with Each Translation”), and Rose Lemberg (“How to Remember to Forget to Remember the Old War”).

We also have a special flash fiction section curated by Hugo-nominated editor, Sigrid Ellis. We have flash from E. Saxey (“Melioration”), Stephen Cox (“The Lamb Chops”), Charles Payseur (“Rubbing Is Racing”), Claudine Griggs (“Helping Hand”), Erica L. Satifka (“Bucket List Found in the Locker of Maddie Price, Age 14, Written Two Weeks Before the Great Uplifting of All Mankind”), Eliza Gauger (“Mama”), Shannon Peavey (“Nothing Goes to Waste”), Bogi Takács (“Increasing Police Visibility”), Sarah Pinsker (“In the Dawns Between Hours”), Gabrielle Friesen (“Deep/Dark Space”), Gabby Reed (“Introductory Materials Part Two: A Brief History of Whaling with Remarks Upon Ancient Practices”), and JY Yang (“Letter From An Artist To A Thousand Future Versions Of Her Wife”).

Our nonfiction editor, Mark Oshiro, has brought us some incredible essays and articles, and we have our usual assortment of author and artist spotlights. And for our ebook readers, we also have our usual ebook-exclusive novella reprint and a pair of novel excerpts.
Thanks for Reading!

We couldn’t publish the magazine without the loyal support of readers like you. So we here at Lightspeed salute you, and would like to thank you for your continued patronage.

Well, that’s about it for this installment of the newsletter. Thanks again for reading. Meanwhile, for more, visit www.lightspeedmagazine.com. See you next month!

For Immediate Release

Trajectory, Inc.

The Ed Greenwood Group

Agreement Reached for Global eBook Distribution

BOSTON and TORONTO—Trajectory, Inc. and The Ed Greenwood Group today reached an agreement for the global distribution of eBooks produced by The Ed Greenwood Group. The Ed Greenwood Group is a new transmedia publishing concern whose production schedule will include novels, anthologies, RPGs (roleplaying games), card and board games, mobile applications, jewelry, clothing, specialty food items, and much more.

The Ed Greenwood Group launches this October (2015) with its first novel, Your World is Doomed by Ed Greenwood, set in a new urban fantasy setting called Hellmaw. Twenty-four novels will follow, one a month, as Mr. Greenwood and his colleagues initialize the first of six Hellmaw story arcs. The year 2016 will see the launch of a more traditional sword-and-sorcery setting code-named Pony Island Adventures. More settings in more genres will follow—For Wolf & Empire (steampunk), The Lost Princesses of Mars (space opera), and A Handful of Bleeding Stars (science fiction), to name a few.

Trajectory is a Boston-based intelligent network that connects publishers with its global digital distribution network of ebook retailers, libraries, schools, and app distributors. The Trajectory network delivers 300+ international points of distribution representing over 230,000 digital endpoints, including every relevant ebook retailer, library distributor, school distributor, and alternative digital sales channel, to reach a potential English-reading international audience of 850 million people all from a single onboarding point. Trajectory recently introduced a series of algorithms that are being used to address the “book discoverability” issue facing the publishing world. Trajectory’s Natural Language Processing Engine (NLPE) is a vibrant new system for enhanced ebook discoverability and reader engagement.

“Trajectory’s distribution systems for ebooks are nothing short of astonishing,” said Ed Greenwood, TEGG’s president and publisher. “Nobody is better at understanding and adapting to the ever-changing ePublishing environment than Trajectory. We are very excited to be partnering with Trajectory to expand the distribution of our books digitally around the globe. Trajectory’s broad reach uniquely positions us to meet demand for The Ed Greenwood Group products in new markets—especially through eRetail libraries—and internationally.”

“The Ed Greenwood Group’s impressive catalogue will appeal to fantasy and genre readers the world over,” said Scott Beatty, Chief Content Officer of Trajectory, Inc. “It’s an honor to work with such a distinguished author and worldbuilder and the incredible lineup of authors and artists he has collected together. Greenwood’s creation, Forgotten Realms®, will turn 50 this year. It’s been a published setting for almost 30 years and has spawned the creation of thousands of books, comic books, and games by hundreds of writers. We are sure The Ed Greenwood Group’s lineup will enjoy the same success.”

The Ed Greenwood Group will be utilizing Trajectory’s Natural Language Processing technology to derive new data analytics from each title. This new dataset compounds global sales and book discovery by enriching title metadata with keywords, people, and places data for superior audience development and channel discovery. Books within the Trajectory system are compared to each other to generate highly accurate recommendations. The goal is a commercially viable option to sales algorithms, using such factors as keywords, complexity, reading level, and the unique use of language to offer readers an alternative form of guidance.

MAY 2015 NEWSLETTER

Dear Readers,

Once in blue moon a publisher announces a product that is something truly special…that special book or magazine that leaves the publisher wondering if he (or she) will ever be able to top that.

The latest issue of Galaxy’s Edge magazine might just be that product. The May issue headlines a ‘new’ story by Robert A. Heinlein, and bookending the fiction from the other end is a brand new Draco Tavern story by Larry Niven. And between the two bookends we have a few writers you just might have also heard of… like Alan Dean Foster, Harry Turtledove, Michael Bishop, Nancy Kress and Sean Williams.

You are, of course, wondering how we can headline a ‘new’ Heinlein (and some of you have probably noted the quotes around the word). Well, technically it has been published once before, but since that publication was in the limited Virginia Edition (limited to 2,000 copies) which sells for $1,500 a set, it is pretty much a ‘new’ story for 99.9% of you.

The magazine is available online and may be purchased for download (or you can buy a print edition). Yes….that is Heinlein masquerading as a cyborg (read his story to find out why).

Buy a copy…you will not regret it.
