The Power of the Written Word.

“My task, which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel—it is, before all, to make you see.” – Joseph Conrad

You know, there is so much going on in this world that if a certain Alien were spying on us from above—from the safe shelter of a spaceship—and had the ability to see our temperament by way of aurora, he would indeed be convinced our planet was burning, and that our poor earth was well on its way to becoming a sun.

Today is a most notable time for intelligent writers to be slinging the ink onto paper in the form of fantasy, science fiction and literary works. Writers are seers, for they form worlds and times and visions in their mind that others can’t see until those imaginings are formed into words. There is so much to show, to communicate, and to teach humanity simply through stories! Hopefully our mission as authors, screenwriters, and artists will be completed before homo sapiens destroy themselves.

Just as the ancients taught through parables, so do we through the novel, the screenplay, the poem. Sometimes I think there is not enough time to write all the novels that the world needs to read.

The urgency is now. Mankind needs to read words of wisdom and encouragement this very moment. Next year may be too late.

“All I need is a sheet of paper and something to write with, and then I can turn the world upside down.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

I’m delighted to see that more and more films adapted from novels are being created. I could speak endlessly on the sad state we’re in with a majority of parents and schools not encouraging children to read…but then there’s no time to waste. If we must make a movie based on a good book, a book that teaches us the condition of mankind, and that stays true to that author’s words, then that makes a good second.

There are many social reasons for the problems the world is facing. But whatever the reason, we as a species are better off to stop trying to find blame, put our hands to the plow and move forward practicing what we must to get along with our neighbors, both old and new. Novels and film can help open our eyes to the pain and suffering of humanity. And Hollywood is not our only source. Cable channels are currently looking for Independent screenplays and film. If you follow the Sundance Film Festival, you’ll find some wonderful specimens of well thought-out stories that are beautifully created. Too many to name.

This is a busy time for writers, especially those who write from the heart. We need you.

“Throughout human history, our greatest leaders and thinkers have used the power of words to transform our emotions, to enlist us in their causes, and to shape the course of destiny. Words can not only create emotions, they create actions. And from our actions flow the results of our lives.” – Tony Robbins
